Preparation
Step 1
How to bake a turkey thigh in a roasting bag? Prepare all the ingredients from the list. Start with the marinade. You can replace balsamic vinegar with regular 9% vinegar or apple cider vinegar. If you have wine vinegar, you can use that too.
Step 2
Rinse the green onions and cut into 3-4 pieces so they fit easily in the blender bowl.
Step 3
Peel the ginger root and cut into random pieces.
Step 4
Remove the seeds and stem from the chili pepper and cut into pieces. With chili, the marinade will be quite spicy. If you want it mild, omit the chili completely, or replace it with a tiny pinch of chili powder.
Step 5
Remove the seeds and stem from the bell pepper and cut into medium cubes.
Step 6
Peel the garlic and cut into pieces.
Step 7
Put the bell pepper and chili, green onions, garlic, and ginger into a blender bowl.
Step 8
Blend to your preferred texture. You can blend into a smooth, thick paste. Mine was chopped very finely, but not into a completely smooth purée.
Step 9
Transfer the chopped vegetables to a bowl, pour in the balsamic vinegar and soy sauce, and mix the marinade.
Step 10
Prepare the turkey thigh: rinse it and pat dry with paper towels. Mine is bone-in but skinless. You can also buy thigh meat that is boneless and skinless. From small farms you may find thighs with skin and bone. Meat with skin turns out juicier because the skin prevents moisture loss and creates a tasty crust. However, turkey with skin can be harder to find in stores - most often it’s sold skinless.
Step 11
Rub the turkey with the marinade and let it marinate for 2-3 hours, or better yet overnight.
Step 12
Place the marinated turkey into a roasting bag and tie it on both ends. Because the marinade is thick, it coats the turkey in a thin layer. I didn’t remove it so the skinless meat wouldn’t dry out while baking.
Step 13
Bake in a preheated 200°C (392°F) oven for about 1 hour, a little less or more depending on your oven. If the meat is bone-in, check especially near the bone - it should be fully cooked and not red or bright pink.
Step 14
Then cut the bag open on top and bake the meat for about 10 more minutes.
Step 15
Transfer the finished turkey to a platter, slice, and serve. Enjoy!
