Preparation
Step 1
How do you make potato casserole? Prepare the ingredients. You can use any ground meat - beef, pork, chicken, or turkey. I used a beef-and-pork mix.
Step 2
Wash and peel the potatoes well. If the potatoes are large, cut them into smaller pieces. Cover with cold water and cook over low heat. Use good-tasting water (filtered or bottled), because it affects the flavor of the mash. Cook the potatoes for 25 minutes, adding salt at the end.
Step 3
While the potatoes cook, fry the ground meat. Peel the onion and dice it finely.
Step 4
Heat a skillet, add vegetable oil, and add the onion. Fry, stirring, for about 5 minutes until translucent.
Step 5
Add the ground meat. Break up any large clumps with a spatula until evenly crumbled. Season with salt and pepper. You can add your favorite spices.
Step 6
Cook the ground meat covered over low heat for 15 minutes.
Step 7
When the potatoes are done, drain them. Heat the milk until hot and pour it into the pot with the potatoes. Mash with a potato masher. Add butter and mix the mash well again.
Step 8
Take a baking dish. Spread the fried ground meat as the first layer.
Step 9
Spread the mashed potatoes on top.
Step 10
Grate the cheese on a coarse grater.
Step 11
Sprinkle the casserole with the grated cheese.
Step 12
Bake at 180°C / 356°F for about 40 minutes. Exact time depends on your oven. The cheese should melt and turn golden.
