Preparation
Step 1
You can use milk of any fat content. For a richer flavor, you can even use cream.
Step 2
Peel the potatoes and rinse them thoroughly. Cut large ones into 2–3 pieces; leave small ones whole. Place the potatoes in a pot, cover with water, and bring to a boil. Add salt. Then reduce the heat slightly and cook until soft, about 15-20 minutes. Check with a knife - if the potato is tender, it’s ready.
Step 3
While the potatoes are boiling, prepare the onions. Peel and finely chop them. Heat a frying pan with a bit of vegetable oil and fry the onions, stirring, for 3-5 minutes until golden brown.
Step 4
When the potatoes are done, drain the water. Add the fried onions and butter to the pot. Mash everything with a potato masher.
Step 5
Heat the milk until hot and pour it into the mashed potatoes. Continue mashing until smooth. The potatoes will gradually absorb the milk. If you prefer a creamier texture, add more milk - adjust to your liking.
Step 6
Delicious and fragrant mashed potatoes with fried onions are ready! This dish makes a perfect side for any meat or fish meal. Optionally, sprinkle with chopped dill or your favorite herbs. Serve warm and enjoy!
