Preparation
Step 1
Prepare all the necessary ingredients. We will make a complete meal of mashed potatoes and fried fish. The fish can be absolutely any kind: I used halibut. It can be fish fillet or a fish steak, it is only preferable that the fish not be too bony.
Step 2
Mix the flour with 1 teaspoon of salt.
Step 3
Wash the fish, cut it into smaller pieces if needed, and coat it on all sides in the flour mixture.
Step 4
Heat vegetable oil in a skillet, preferably one with a nonstick coating. The oil can be any kind, sunflower or olive, but to prevent it from burning in the pan, I recommend using refined vegetable oil for frying. Place the coated fish in the pan and fry it over low heat on one side for about 7–8 minutes, until a golden, crispy crust forms.
Step 5
Then carefully turn the fish over and fry until done, about another 7–8 minutes. If necessary, repeat the frying on both sides once more.
Step 6
While the fish is frying, let’s make the mashed potatoes. Wash and peel the potatoes. Try to remove the peel thinly; it is best to use a vegetable peeler for this.
Step 7
Cut the peeled potatoes as you like and place them in the pot in which you will make the purée.
Step 8
Rinse the potatoes and cover them with clean, filtered water.
Step 9
Add salt.
Step 10
And add a peeled garlic clove. It will give the finished dish a unique aroma. Bring to a boil over medium heat and cook for 25 minutes with the lid on. Then drain the water.
Step 11
Pour warm milk into the cooked potatoes. The milk must be warm. If it is cold, the mashed potatoes will turn gray.
Step 12
Add the butter.
Step 13
Mash with a potato masher or a special purée attachment. I do not recommend whipping the purée with a mixer unless the mixer has a special attachment for mashed potatoes. A regular whisk attachment is absolutely not suitable for making purée.
Step 14
Serve the mashed potatoes with the fried fish. Enjoy your meal!
