Preparation
Step 1
How do you make classic Turkish baklava with nuts at home? Prepare all the necessary ingredients. Sift the flour into a large bowl and make a well in the center. Crack 1 egg into it and add 50 g melted butter, about 3 1/2 tablespoons, melted in a double boiler or in the microwave, plus a pinch of salt. Pour in 1 cup of warm milk.
Step 2
Stir the egg, butter, and milk mixture with a fork, gradually pulling in flour from the sides of the well. Knead the dough. It should turn out dense and elastic. You may need a little less or a little more flour, since different brands behave differently.
Step 3
When the dough is ready, cover it with a kitchen towel and place it in a warm spot for 30 minutes to rest.
Step 4
How do you make the filling for Turkish baklava with walnuts? Grind the walnuts into crumbs using a blender, add the powdered sugar and cinnamon, and mix.
Step 5
After 30 minutes, take out the dough and divide it into 20 equal balls.
Step 6
Take 1 dough ball and roll it into a thin sheet, then brush it with melted butter.
Step 7
Place about 2 tablespoons of filling on the sheet, leaving about 2–3 cm, about 3/4–1 1/4 inches, from the edges. Place a pencil or a small stick on top.
Step 8
Roll the sheet into a log using the pencil.
Step 9
Push the ends of the roll toward the center and remove the pencil.
Step 10
Shape all 20 rolls this way. Grease a baking dish with butter and place the prepared rolls tightly next to each other. Mix the egg yolk with 1 tablespoon of milk and brush each roll with this mixture. Then place the dish into a preheated oven at 200°C (390°F) for about 10-15 minutes. The time and temperature are approximate, so adjust to your oven.
Step 11
When the time is up, remove the baklava and brush it with the remaining melted butter. Return it to the oven, reduce the temperature to 170°C (340°F), and bake for about 40 minutes to 1 hour, until the baklava becomes fully golden. It may take a little less or a little more time, depending on your oven.
Step 12
How do you make the syrup for baklava? In a saucepan, combine the honey and water, place over the heat, and cook for about 10 minutes after it comes to a boil. Choose natural, fragrant honey, since the flavor of the honey will affect the taste of the finished pastry.
Step 13
When baking is finished, remove the baklava from the oven and pour the prepared honey syrup over it. Sprinkle the top with chopped nuts and let it rest for about 1 1/2-2 hours. Your Turkish baklava with honey is ready. Enjoy your meal!
