Preparation
Step 1
How do you make orange mulled wine at home? Prepare the ingredients. Use good-quality natural wine, as the quality of the finished drink will depend on it. It can be any wine, from dry to semi-sweet. I prefer dry wines; if it is not sweet enough for you, you can always add sugar. I also use whole spices: a cinnamon stick and a star anise, but you can also use ground seasonings and spices.
Step 2
Wash the orange well and dry it. Cut half of the orange into rounds; from the second half, you will only need the juice.
Step 3
Pour the wine into a thick-bottomed saucepan, then add the star anise and cinnamon. At this stage, you can add your favorite spices and additions: ginger, cloves, nutmeg, vanilla, mint, or pieces of apple and lemon.
Step 4
Add the sliced orange to the wine, and squeeze the juice from the second half of the orange into the saucepan.
Step 5
Heat the wine over low heat to 90°C / 194°F, but do not bring it to a boil. Taste for sweetness and add sugar if needed, although mulled wine should not be too sweet. Be sure to strain the finished drink so the spices and fruit pieces do not get into the glasses, then pour it into glasses.
Step 6
Serve the mulled wine hot - that is the whole point of this drink: to warm you up. Enjoy!
