Preparation
Step 1
How do you make herring bread spread? Prepare the listed ingredients. It is best to use lightly salted herring. If the fish is salty, you will need to increase the amount of butter or cheese. The weight of the fish is not especially important. Boil the carrot in advance until tender and let it cool. Put the butter in the freezer so it will be easier to grate. The processed cheese can be of any consistency.
Step 2
Rinse the herring under cold water and pat it dry. Cut off the head and tail. Cut open the belly and remove the innards. Carefully remove the backbone and small bones. Using a sharp knife, cut the herring fillet into very small pieces. Place the chopped herring in a deep bowl.
Step 3
Take the butter out of the freezer. Grate the butter on a coarse grater and add it to the bowl with the chopped fish.
Step 4
Peel the boiled and cooled carrot. Grate the carrot on a medium or fine grater and add it to the bowl with the previously chopped ingredients.
Step 5
Add the processed cheese to the other ingredients. If your cheese comes in a firm block, grate it on a coarse grater as well. Mix the mixture thoroughly. If needed, add salt to taste, and you can also add ground black pepper. To my taste, it does not need any additional spices.
Step 6
The herring spread can be served right after it is made. After standing in the refrigerator, it becomes firmer, but it still spreads well on bread. This herring paste is wonderful paired with toasted dark bread. For a more balanced flavor, these sandwiches can be sprinkled with chopped fresh herbs or green onions. Enjoy!
