Preparation
Step 1
Prepare all the ingredients from the list. Besides pork, you can also use beef, lamb, chicken or turkey, but keep in mind that the calorie content and cooking time will change.
Step 2
Defrost the pork in advance if needed. Pat it dry and cut it into strips. Use boneless pork only. Choose the cut you prefer, such as ham, shoulder, loin or tenderloin. I used ham.
Step 3
Melt half of the butter in a frying pan. If you prefer, you can use vegetable oil instead. Add the pork and fry over medium-high heat until golden brown on all sides. At the end, sprinkle with spices to taste and stir. Transfer the meat to a pot.
Step 4
In the same pan where the meat was cooked, pour in about two-thirds of the total water and add the sour cream. Stir until smooth and set over low heat. Sour cream of any fat content will work; I used 15%. In a separate bowl, combine the flour with the remaining water and stir until there are no lumps. This will thicken the sauce and help keep the sour cream from curdling.
Step 5
Pour the flour mixture into the pan with the sauce and stir well. Bring the mixture to a boil. Season with salt and pepper, add the remaining butter and the bay leaves. Bring back to a boil and simmer, stirring, for 2–3 minutes.
Step 6
Pour the hot gravy over the meat in the pot. Place on the stove and simmer over low heat for about 10–15 minutes, or longer, until the pork is tender and fully cooked. The exact time depends on how thinly you sliced the meat and which cut you chose.
Step 7
Divide the meat between plates and serve. If you like, sprinkle with chopped herbs and add your favorite side dish, such as boiled potatoes or pasta. Enjoy!
