Easy
About 20 min.
Preparation
Step 1
Make sure the buttermilk, milk, and butter are at room temperature. The butter should be soft.
Step 2
Sift the flour into a large bowl to aerate it - this helps the dough rise better and makes the buns fluffier. Set aside 2-3 tablespoons of flour for kneading later. Mix the remaining flour with baking powder.
Step 3
In another bowl, combine the softened butter, salt, sugar, and vanilla sugar.
Step 4
Mix everything until smooth and creamy.
Step 5
Add the buttermilk and milk to the butter mixture.
Step 6
Stir well, but it’s fine if the mixture isn’t perfectly smooth - just make sure the butter is evenly distributed.
Step 7
Add the sifted flour mixture to the bowl. Stir first with a spoon, then knead by hand. If the dough is too sticky, gradually add some of the reserved flour while kneading.
Step 8
You may need slightly more or less flour depending on the consistency. The dough should be soft, elastic, and barely sticky.
Step 9
Divide the dough into equal portions and roll each one into a ball.
Step 10
Place the dough balls on a parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving some space between them, as they will rise during baking.
Step 11
Bake the buttermilk buns in a preheated oven at 350°F (180°C) for about 20 minutes until golden. Adjust time and temperature depending on your oven.
Step 12
Let the buns cool, then sprinkle with powdered sugar if desired. Enjoy!
