Preparation
Step 1
Prepare the ingredients. Choose good-quality finely ground corn grits, as they will cook more quickly and evenly. Adjust the amount of water depending on whether you prefer a thicker or thinner porridge. For a plant-based version, replace the butter with vegetable oil.
Step 2
Place the corn grits in a bowl or small saucepan and rinse several times under cool running water until the water runs clear.
Step 3
Transfer the rinsed grits to the multicooker bowl and pour in the water. For a thick, creamy porridge, use about 3 parts water to 1 part corn grits; for a thinner consistency, use about 4 parts water to 1 part grits. Add the sugar and salt, adjusting the amounts to taste.
Step 4
Insert the bowl into the multicooker and close the lid. Select a program suitable for cooking grains or porridge. Depending on the appliance, this may be called Porridge, Milk Porridge or Stew. Cook for approximately 1 hour, or until the corn grits are completely soft.
Step 5
When the program finishes, open the lid and add the butter. Stir well. If the porridge is slightly too thin, leave it on the Keep Warm setting with the lid closed for a little longer so it can thicken, then serve.
