Preparation
Step 1
Prepare the required ingredients. You can use trout or another fish from the salmon family. Chilled fish is preferable, although frozen fish will also work. Choose a medium-thick piece so it cooks through without becoming dry. Trout steaks can also be used. Any vegetable oil will work, and fresh garlic can be replaced with garlic powder.
Step 2
If using frozen fish, thaw it beforehand on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator. Rinse the fish thoroughly and remove any membranes. If using skin-on trout fillet, carefully remove the bones. You can leave the bones in if grilling trout steaks.
Step 3
Add the salt to the vegetable oil. Coarse sea salt works particularly well.
Step 4
Add minced garlic or garlic powder. You can press the garlic, chop it finely with a knife or grate it. At this stage, you can also add other favorite herbs and spices, such as dried dill, oregano or allspice. Avoid using too many seasonings so the natural flavor of the trout remains prominent.
Step 5
Pour the marinade over the fish and cover the container with plastic wrap or a lid.
Step 6
Leave the fish to marinate for anywhere from 30 minutes to 12 hours. Before grilling, remove any pieces of fresh garlic from the surface with a paper towel so they do not burn.
Step 7
Prepare hot coals in the grill. You can use ready-made charcoal or burn firewood until glowing coals remain. Place the fish on the grill grate and cook, turning it fairly often to prevent burning. Trout is a fatty fish, so dripping fat may cause flare-ups. Grill for approximately 20 minutes in total, adjusting the time according to the thickness of the pieces.
Step 8
Serve the trout immediately while it is still hot and aromatic. It does not require a substantial side dish and pairs well with fresh seasonal vegetables or a vegetable salad.
