Preparation
Step 1
Prepare the ingredients. You may need a little extra milk to thin the batter if it turns out too thick. Use refined, neutral-flavored vegetable oil. Adjust the amount of sugar to taste.
Step 2
Add all the dry ingredients to a bowl: flour, cocoa powder, sugar and baking powder. Mix until evenly combined. You can use a fork or a whisk.
Step 3
Pour the milk and vegetable oil into the dry mixture, then add the egg. Mix until completely smooth, which should take no more than about a minute.
Step 4
The finished batter should be smooth and pourable, similar in consistency to thin sour cream. If it is too thick, add a little more milk; the original recipe uses about 1 extra tablespoon.
Step 5
Choose microwave-safe cups without metallic gold or silver decoration. Divide the batter between the cups, filling each no more than two-thirds full because the cakes will rise considerably. The original recipe uses two cups with capacities of approximately 3½ and 5 fl oz.
Step 6
Microwave the cakes one at a time on maximum power for 3–5 minutes, adjusting the time to your microwave. The original recipe cooks one cake for 4 minutes at 700 W. Check with a toothpick inserted into the center; it should come out dry. Remove the cup carefully, as it may be hot.
Step 7
Serve the chocolate cake directly in the cup in which it was cooked. If desired, decorate with whipped cream, berries or chocolate.
